Our mornings begin when the children are welcomed into the playroom at 9:15am.

We organise our sessions so that children can choose from, and work at, a range of activities and, in doing so, build up their ability to select and work through a task to its completion.

There is often a creative activity with individual support from staff following the theme of the week.  A healthy snack and drink is available during the morning.

The staff play with and support the children in their learning, as well as observe them.

The children may be gathered into a group towards the end of the session, for discussion (circle time) or singing.  The session ends with story time.

Lunch times we sit together 12-1pm and eat our healthy packed lunch bought in from home.

Then the afternoon session begins at 1pm until 3.30pm.  You can choose morning or afternoon sessions with or without lunch, also all day sessions are available if your child is happy and settled staying the whole day.

The provision for children's learning and development is guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage (Heavitree Community preschool follows the Development Matters 2021) and all children are helped to learn and develop skills in the areas of -:

Communication and Language,

Personal, Social and Emotional Development,

Physical Development,

Literacy,

Mathematics,

Understanding the World; and

Expressive Arts and Design

A range of equipment and opportunities allow the children to gain confidence and the enjoyment in the development of their own bodily skills, also increasing ability and control when moving and balancing. Children are supported in the development of the fine motor skills required to use tools, including pencils and scissors, and to handle small objects with control and precision.  Example activities include -: balancing beams, parachute, tunnel, scissor skills, music and movement.

Children are encouraged to use a wide range of resources in order to express their own ideas.  Creative activities help improve hand/eye coordination and concentration.  Children join in with and respond to role play, music and stories.

Within Heavitree Community Pre-school, all children are supported in developing their potential at their own pace with the help of their key worker.  We offer a wide range of activities including painting, play dough, sand and water play, role play, cooking, singing, construction toys, pre-writing, pre-maths and pre-science skills, physical activities and many more.  Through all these activities children will develop social skills such as taking turns with others, resolving differences of opinion, group conversation and learning to share and work together.

We are registered for up to 32 children at each pre-school session, with a minimum adult:child ratio of 1:8 for over 3 year olds and 1:4 for under 3's.  We are open for 38 weeks each year (term time).
