NAPPY CHANGING & INTIMATE CARE POLICY

We are accessible to all children regardless of toileting needs. When using the term nappy changing this also refers to changing a child with wet or soiled clothes (intimate care).

To enable us to offer this service the following will be adhered to:

  • In all instances, the child will be taken to a quiet place, where nappies can be changed in private eg disabled toilet.  The door to this area will be kept slightly open, so that staff/child are not placed in a vulnerable position.

  • Staff are required to wear disposable gloves and apron while changing a child. The soiled nappy will be placed in a nappy bag, double bagged and then placed in a covered bin. Soiled clothes will be bagged, for the parent to take home at the end of the session.

  • The changing mat and other facilities will be cleaned with antibacterial spray. Hands will be washed afterwards and protective clothing will be disposed of.

  • Only staff who have successfully undergone a DBS check will change a nappy or provide intimate care. If there is known risk of false allegation by a child, then a second member of staff must be available to supervise the Changing process.

  • Parents/carers are asked to ensure that their child is changed at the latest possible time before being brought to pre-school. Spare nappies and a change of clothing must be provided.

  • We record any marks or rash that is detected when changing a child.

  • Staff will check nappies regularly will change the child should s/he become soiled, or become uncomfortably wet.  For a child staying a full day, the nappy will be changed after lunch, if it has not been changed prior to this.

  • If a parent/carer does not want staff to change their child’s nappy, or if a child becomes unduly distressed, then the parent/carer will be telephoned immediately and asked what appropriate action to they would like staff to take.  We ask parental permission to change Nappies or soiled pants as part of our permissions process.

  • We recognise that times such as personal care with children can offer a valuable opportunity to interact with the child and get to know them better.  We will use this as experience to create a happy and trusting atmosphere to develop language and communication with the children, in an appropriate manner.

  • A nappy changing log will be used to record the times a nappy has been changed.
