Thailand - Linked to the types of things we have been doing at Pre-school.
Country of the month – Thailand
One of the many things we have looked at is the flag for Thailand. We looked at colour, pattern and copied these colours onto outlined pages. You could do the same at home with your child or to extend their learning, you could help your child to draw the map with a ruler, looking at positioning and length of lines
etc incorporating some mathematical language into their learning.
We continue to focus on letters and sounds both throughout the day within our daily practice and in more focussed circle groups. We split our groups depending on ages and stages and are really enjoying games such as matching the instrument/sound. If you don’t have instruments you can use a pan or keys etc. Have two sets of each sound, one for you and one for your child. When you play a sound they try and find the object that matched that sound. This is great for really focussing on different sounds and helps with phonics. Other games we are currently playing are supporting alliteration and the segmenting and blending aspects of the Letters and Sounds Programme. A simple game for this needing no resources is I Spy. Either using just the initial sound of a word, or segmenting the word i.e. I spy with my little eye something that sounds like c-a-t and let the child help blend it together.
The children are really enjoying playdough, learning and perfecting techniques, rolling, cutting, shaping, squeezing. This is a great resource and not only is it fun, but helps build the muscle strength in arms, hands and fingers to help with pencil/pen grip for writing. The playdough recipe we use in the setting is as follows: 2 cups of plain flour, 2 cups of water, 1 cup of salt and a ‘glug’ of oil.

In the last two weeks we have been welcoming and settling some more of our new children. In the garden we have been exploring the mud kitchen, pouring and mixing using all of the bowls, pans and utensils. We have also been balancing on beams, twirling hoops, walking on stilts, playing chasing games. And we have had bubbly water - filling, pouring and emptying.
In our small world play we have investigated dinosaurs, with stones, trees and duplo caves. We have also played with fairies, wizards and knights within our fairyland play. We have been completing puzzles, constructing with duplo and lego. We have explored the cogs and tracks, tessellation shapes and threading fruit, following patterns.
We have been looking at story sacks, Shaun the shy shark and The Scarecrow who didn’t scare. We were interactive with these stories with a small group of children each partaking with a prop. All of the children enjoyed this.
We have been counting and matching dinosaurs, spinning a dial to get a number 1-5 then counting that number of dinosaurs, then repeating this process, then adding the two numbers together by counting the dinosaurs all together. We have used the numicon to match numbers and tally the number too. The children drew inside the holes of the numicon, counted the dots then wrote or copied the number.
We have been exploring colours in paint, using autumnal colours, red, yellow, orange, green and purple. We have used brushes and mashers to make marks. Making leaves for our tree and copying some Salvador Dali pictures.
We have been making kites and clay elephants as well as collaging Elmer in line with our country of the month; Thailand. Thailand is located in the centre of Indochina. There are 35,000 Buddhist temples and they grow lots of types of orchid. Kite flying is a sport.
Within Letters and Sounds we have been looking at Instrumental sounds, investigating the musical instruments in whole group and smaller groups. Sometimes hiding the instruments so that the children have to listen and match it. Also using our voice, guess which grown-up is saying, “hello”.
We have been picking produce from our front garden, grown in the Spring, children may bring home some of this as we cannot use in Pre-School at the moment.
Gentle reminder: Please name am and pm snacks. Thank you.

Shark in the Park
You could make a telescope out of a kitchen roll holder or by rolling up paper and sellotaping it together.
Have a go at decorating your telescope using pens, pencils or sticking sequins, cotton wool or glitter on.
Look through your telescope - what can you see?
What objects did Timothy see through his telescope?
The story has rhyming words boy /toy shark/ park- practise some rhyming together.
How many words can you think of that rhyme with cat to make a rhyming string? Hat, mat, rat, sat, pat, bat fat etc
What words rhyme with dog?
Dog,jog, fog, cog, log, tog etc.
Sing some nursery rhymes together. Emphasise the rhyming words.
Have a look around the house to see what objects rhyme bin/tin hat/mat

We hope you enjoy painting and story time with Tina.
Can you sing Old MacDonald had a farm ? See if you can name all the animals in the story.
What noise do they make.
Count how many animals they can see on a page.
For the older children think about prepositions such as is the sky above or below the animals. Is the grass above the sky or below .
Look at the characters and talk about the position such as when pulling the cow who is behind the cow who is in front of the cow.
